Below you will find our current distance learning schedule. It will begin with a glossary of distance learning terms, move into defining the difference between synchronous and asynchronous learning, and finish by outlining the specific schedules for each grade level in our school.

Beginning on September 9th (Grades 1-5), the students day will begin at 9:00 AM and end at 3:00 PM.

Most students will likely have live Zoom meetings with their teachers every day in small groups. We will work with families to schedule group times that work for each family.

In addition to the scheduled live sessions every day, students will have some independent work. This may include watching a short instructional video or completing work left over from their session with the teacher.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

 Term  Definition
Synchronous  Live session in Zoom (whole group, small group, individual) where teachers and students interact in a live way.
 Asynchronous
Independent work time for students. Watching pre-recorded content, working on classwork either digitally or paper pencil work.
Morning Meeting Whole group meeting for morning check-in. Content can include, but is not limited to: SEL learning, Weekly Second Step lesson, Number Corner, community-building activities, attendance taking, etc.
Attendance  Prior to the morning meeting, students/families will log into the OSD Portal to complete the attendance check in.
Core Instruction Time (reading, Writing, math, Science, Social Studies, and Second Steps) Small group work in Zoom with classroom teacher, focused on one content area at a time. Core time is regularly scheduled and consistent for families, and may be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Students are practicing new skills with teachers during core instruction time. Whole group instruction can happen, but all students must be present or have access.
Intervention/Enrichment Time Small group time. This is time for Special Education, LAP, EL, Intervention/Enrichment, etc., to pull small groups of students. Classroom teachers and support staff are also pulling a small group of students.
 Specialist Time
Music, PE, Art, Library. Classroom teachers are not required to attend. Sessions will be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous time.

Teacher Librarians will begin the year developing a plan for book reservation and check-out before providing instruction.
Office Hours Time for teachers to connect one-on-one with students or families to support their educational journey. Priority given to those furthest from educational justice.
 Flipped Classroom
Students engage in new learning through pre-recorded videos prior to attending a live session with the teacher. During the live session, students spend time applying the skill they learned in an asynchronous setting.

Synchronous: Live Instruction

What it is:

  • Student and teacher have a scheduled time/task to be completed at a specific time
  • Could include: class meetings, direct instruction or live collaboration
  • Used to introduce, reinforce, practice, apply or extend
  • Short periods of instruction (whole or small group instruction)
  • Students interacting with one another (whole class or in small groups)
  • Students working on assignments with support from teacher or para-educator
  • Family/student support time to ask questions
  • Small group or 1:1

What it is not:

  • Continuous hours of time on a computer
  • Lecture style for long periods of time
  • New learning which is completely dependent on student being in the live session

Asynchronous: Pre-Recorded instruction

What it is:

  • Opportunities to learn through enriching offline lessons
  • Recorded by teacher and/or teacher teams or specialist (share the workload)
  • Flexible time and/or day when the task is completed; allows students to engage at any time and re-watch if needed
  • Where teachers will deliver the majority of core instruction so students can access if they do not attend live sessions
  • Videos are great for building a foundation for further learning
  • Embedding questions in videos can improve student interaction and provide you with formative assessment

What it is not:

  • Lengthy videos: Optimum time for pre-recorded video is under 6 minutes; engagement drops after 9 mins.
  • Cookie cutter polished content from other sources: it doesn’t need to be pretty, it needs to be personal
