June 2018

From the desk of Principal Ernie Rascon

Dear Parents,

Greetings! We are rapidly winding down the school year and what fantastic year it has turned out to be! I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support of our fine teaching staff and support for your children this year.

Many thanks to our Hansen Community Council. With their support and energy there are many, many things we accomplished at our school. Thanks to H.C.C. officers Chanel Nielsen, Summer Anderson, Alycia West, and Kate Thompson along with Greg Norman, Sonya Wright, Karen Trevan and the many, many parents for their hard work and support. Thanks to all the parents who planned and worked at H.C.C. events over the course of this past school year. Yearbooks will be arriving very soon. Thank you Claire Beagle for all of your great work.

I would also like to thank all of our parent volunteers that were able to spend time in our classrooms this year. Without your support there would be many children who might not have received direct help with reading, math, or other areas of instructional need. Also, volunteers provide many other valuable services such as organizing our Junior Programs, fundraising, working in the library, sewing costumes, assisting with the Book Fair, Pizza & Bingo Night, and many other activities or functions. Our annual volunteer social will be a ‘Pay It Forward’ in October 2018.

Thanks to those who were able to attend Muffins for Mom. This serves as a reminder that our annual Donuts for Dad is Friday, June 15 at 7:15 am in the cafeteria. While you are here, please check the lost and not yet found area to pick up any missing clothing items before we turn them over to the clothing bank.

Finally, thanks to our staff. Each and every one of our teachers is fabulous! The Hansen School staff is filled with superstars! We have a change in status for Mrs. Kathy Gillespie. Mrs. Gillespie will be moving into a third grade teaching position at Boston Harbor beginning in September after 22 years of distinguished teaching service at Hansen. I will miss Kathy’s loyalty to our community. Mr. Francisco Lopez will vacate his second grade teaching position and move into fifth grade replacing Mrs. Gillespie.
Hansen supply lists for all classrooms will be available in the office soon. Supply lists will be posted in the main entryway windows after June 25, 2018. A copy of supply lists will available in the west side office supply stores.

The onset of school is exciting and one of the things kids look forward to is buying new clothing, shoes, etc. When making purchases please keep the following in mind:
• Clothing should cover stomachs, backs, shoulders, chests, and undergarments.
• Shorts, skirts, and dresses should be longer than mid thigh and cover undergarments.
• Footwear must be worn at all times and should be appropriate to the activity. Strapless shoes and high heels are discouraged for safety reasons.
• Exceptions may be made for P. E. or school activities.

Student classroom teacher placements for 2018 – 19 have begun. Classroom teacher placement is a decision made with a lot of thought and effort by teachers and staff at Hansen. Teachers work together to make up the best possible class lists for the coming school year. Teachers take many things into considerations when developing balanced class placements, such as: Behavior, academic performance, gender balance, and social dynamics. Changes to class rosters affect the school in many ways. Student classroom teacher placements should be considered final.

One final plea to drivers at drop off time in the morning. This applies to just a handful of drivers. Please do not enter the bus entrance. This is very dangerous with kids getting off the bus. The bus bay is just for buses not drivers taking a short cut to avoid the drop off in the traffic circle.
One final plea to drivers at pick time after school. Again, this applies to just a handful of drivers. Please do not park in the handicapped spots or make your kids go into the parking lot to get in the car to avoid the long line. This puts everyone in an awkward spot. Let’s avoid that conflict. All staff are trying their best to keep kids safe. What we’re doing is what we think is the safest procedure for kids. We’re not trying to make after school pick up any more of a hassle than it already is. Please be safe.

School will start on Wednesday, September 5 and conclude Tuesday, June 18, 2019. Our school day start time for the 2018 – 19 school year will be at 8:20 am and dismissal will be at 2:42 pm. We will have early release for students to go home every Wednesday starting next year. Start time will remain the same at 8:20 on those days, however dismissal will be at 1:52 every Wednesday.

Sincerely,

Ernie Rascon
