December 2018

Message from Hansen Elementary

Greetings! I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday. We now move into the end of the year, fast. Although December is a short school month, it is packed with fun events. Take a look at the calendar of events below for all the fun and festivities.

Weather has been quite mild this year, but winter does bring adverse weather. Looking at the forecast for December, snowflakes will fall here in Olympia. Make sure your car is equipped with extra warm clothes, blankets, water, portable radio and flashlight with fresh batteries.

Familiarize yourself with Olympia School District Emergency Information. Go to the OSD webpage, scroll to the bottom and click on the Emergency Information tab in the blue ribbon. You fill find snow bus routes listed and local radio/TV channels to tune into for further school information in the event of an emergency.

This is also a great time of year to review safety tips with your kiddos. Good things to go over are:
• Stay in groups when walking to/from school
• Review safe walking routes to/from school
• Review where it is safe to play/visit
• Go over your home emergency plan in case of fire or other emergencies
• List of safe people to call or go to in case of emergency

Winter break begins Wednesday, December 19 and school resumes on Thursday, January 3. Have a wonderful holiday break. See you next year.

Sincerely,

Hansen Elementary

LIBRARY NEWS

Thank you to EVERYONE who supported our book fair during conference week. We had just over $9800 in sales, which is a school record! A HUGE thank you to Karah Trevan for organizing such a successful fair and to all the volunteers who worked at it.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate how the Hansen community comes out every year and supports the book fair which provides funds to buy books for the library. THANK YOU!

WHAT’S NEW WITH PBIS?

With winter weather, we tend to gravitate indoors, leading us to more screen time. Common Sense Media can help parents make informed media choices with their children and navigate questions like:

 - What movies, TV shows, apps, and games are OK for my child?
- What should I do if my child is a victim of cyber-bullying?
- What YouTube sites are appropriate for my eight-year-old?

If you haven't already done so, check out commonsensemedia.org. Here are some quotes from their website:

"Common sense is the leading independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology."

"Kids today spend over 50 hours of screen time every week. The media content they consume and create has a profound impact on their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Leaning how to use media and technology wisely is an essential skill for life and learning in the 21st century."
