What is the Hansen Alternative Program (HAP)?

The Hansen Alternative Program (HAP) provides families within the Olympia School District an opportunity to engage in a collaborative and inventive educational experience with teachers, students, and other parents.  (Please see the Program Overview for more.)

HAP enrollment is open to all OSD families via a lottery.

Any family within the Olympia School District can pre-register for HAP. All families new to HAP, both inside or outside of the Hansen service area, have an equal chance to enroll in HAP through a lottery process. See the HAP Handbook for detailed information about program enrollment.

Interested parents must attend one Parent Information Night.

To participate in the lottery, parents must attend one of the two information meetings at Hansen Elementary and submit a form indicating interest. HAP pre-registration forms provided during these meetings must be returned by interested parents at the meeting or at the school office by the pre-registration deadline (April 12th by 12:00 noon) to ensure participation in the HAP lottery. Once the lottery is completed (April 14, 2017), new student placement begins and a waiting list is established.

2017 Parent Information Nights:

Information sessions for prospective parents to learn about and apply to the Hansen Alternative Program for this current school year, which has an enrollment-by-lottery system, are on March 16 and March 21, 2017.  Parents need to attend one (and only one) of these two meetings. More information is available here.

After attending one of these meetings, completing and submitting the HAP application, prospective parents are welcome to come to Observation Week, where they are allowed to observe the four HAP classrooms in progress.  (Sign-up times are available at the information meetings.)  Observation Week is to be announced at a later date. For questions, please contact HAP coordinators at hansenhap@gmail.com), or phone the school office at 596-7400. Enrollment dates for the 2017-18 school year will occur at similar parts of the calendar as in the previous year (dates TBA around January 2017).

The HAP Lottery for academic year 2017-18 will be on April 14, 2017.  Applicant families can attend the lottery, but are not required to.  All applicant families will be notified of results by mail.
