May 2018
From the desk of Principal Ernie Rascon
Dear Parents,
Greetings! The 2017 – 2018 school year is passing quickly and May is a very, very busy month. Here is what’s ahead of us:
The Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) will begin on May 1 and will conclude on June 6. Good luck 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 7 through May 11. Thanks to our Hansen teaching staff for the wonderful job they do each and every day with kids. Take a moment to pass on kind thoughts and words to your child’s teacher when you see them.
The 22nd annual Muffins for Mom will be Friday, May 11 at 7:15 am. The turnout will be incredible. Get to the cafeteria early for the best selection of muffins. Arrive early for a good parking place.
Hansen Field Day is Friday, June 1. It’s a very fun day for kids. Please make sure your child wears appropriate footwear for a day outside.
As the weather continues to be cool one day and warm the next, our lost and yet-to-be found collection of jackets, sweatshirts, and other belongings continues to grow larger by the day. Please remind your child that as they shed layers during playtime to please pick up their belongings when they go back to class.
Student classroom teacher placements for 2018 – 19 have begun. Classroom teacher placement is a decision made with a lot of thought and effort by teachers and staff at Hansen. Teachers work together to make up the best possible class lists for the coming school year. Teachers take many things into considerations when developing balanced class placements, such as: behavior, academic performance, gender balance, and social dynamics. Changes to class rosters affect the school in many ways. Student classroom teacher placements should be considered final.
Sincerely,
Ernie Rascon

The School Bike Challenge is coming to Hansen
Celebrate National Bike Month and Bike to School Day with us this May! In partnership with the Thurston County Bicycle Commuter Challenge (BCC), Hansen will be hosting the Bike to School Challenge. Students (and staff) can participate in National Bike to School Day on May 9th. All you have to do is ride your bike to school on the 9th! If you are up for more of a challenge, you can participate in National Bike Month by biking to school as often as possible from May 1st to May 15th and logging your miles. There will be prizes! It's kind of like Track Stars, but for biking! If you would like more information about the BCC or the Bike to School Challenge, contact Ms. Clark.
Hansen Library
IT’S TIME TO FIND THOSE BOOKS
As the end of the year approaches it is time to get all of the overdue books back to the library. Please ask your child if he/she has an overdue book and, if so, turn it in, pay for it/replace it, or see Mrs. Arbuckle in the library. Did you know you can access the Hansen library at http://hansen.osd.wednet.edu/ ? Click on Library and then have your child log in to see what books he/she has out.
