April 2018

From the desk of Principal Ernie Rascon

Dear Parents,

Greetings! Let’s have a strong push for continued success upon our return from Spring Break.

The annual H. C. C. Bingo & Pizza Night on March 16th was a smashing success! Special thanks to those who organized the event and many special thanks to all parents who helped set up the cafeteria, served food and refreshments, and cleaned up afterwards.

The new Hansen mini building was occupied by 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students on Monday, March 19. Thank you to those parents, students and teachers that attended the dedication ceremony on Thursday, March 22.

Fifth grade students will attend Cispus/Outdoor School first session this year. Baggage/luggage will be picked up and taken to Camp Cispus with the kids on Wednesday, April 11th at 8:30 am. The students will leave for Cispus on Wednesday, April 11th and return on Friday, April 13th between 2:00 and 2:30 pm. Please mark your calendars now as these dates are not a misprint. Kids who are not going to Cispus are expected to attend school on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Muffins for Mom will be on Friday, May 11th at 7:15 am in the cafeteria.

As we begin asking families about whether they are returning to Hansen next school year our teachers begin to think about making student placements for the next school year (keep an eye out for an email requesting your enrollment plans for next school year). Student classroom teacher placement is a decision made with a lot of thought and effort by teachers and staff at Hansen. Teachers work together to make the best possible class lists for the coming school year. Teachers take many things into considerations when developing balanced class placements, such as: behavior, academic performance, gender balance, and social dynamics. Changes to class rosters affect the school in many ways. Student classroom teacher placement should be considered final.

Have a safe, fun, and relaxing Spring break!

Sincerely,
Ernie Rascon

The School Bike Challenge is coming to Hansen

Celebrate National Bike Month and Bike to School Day with us this May! In partnership with the Thurston County Bicycle Commuter Challenge (BCC), Hansen will be hosting the Bike to School Challenge. Students (and staff) can participate in National Bike to School Day on May 9th. All you have to do is ride your bike to school on the 9th! If you are up for more of a challenge, you can participate in National Bike Month by biking to school as often as possible from May 1st to May 15th and logging your miles. There will be prizes! It's kind of like Track Stars, but for biking! If you would like more information about the BCC or the Bike to School Challenge, contact Ms. Clark.

Battle of the Books

Way to go to all of the 4th and 5th graders who read like crazy from mid-December to early March for the Battle of the Books.  We had great conversations about all the stories and created Google slides about the different genres that were represented. In addition, many students said they read and enjoyed books they would have never selected on their own.

Congratulations to the Spidget Finners team from Mrs. Wesley's class for winning first place in the 2018 Battle of the Books final battle on March 19th. The Fantasy Five team from Mrs. Fierro's class came in a close second place. Well done to all the teams! We will see you next year for Battle of the Books 2019.

What's New with PBIS?

In on-going support to teachers and Hansen students to be “Safe, Kind and Free to Learn” the administration has committed to teaching one PBIS strategy a month for teachers to utilize in their classroom! This includes library, PE and most specialists.

This month’s strategy is the “One- Timer” and it focuses on being “Free to Learn” and can be a stepping-stone to becoming a Self-Manager.  It is designed for students who are able to stay on task for short periods of time in one setting.

Here is how it works:  For every subject or class period during the day a teacher may award one to three “1-Timer” necklaces to students who begin their expected work after being asked one time. They wear that necklace for that subject period, returning the necklace to the teacher afterwards.  When a new subject begins the teacher may award one to three necklaces again and the process starts over.   Students may earn a necklace several times a day becoming a 1-Timer!

Parents, please asks your kids about this strategy and encourage them to be a 1-Timer!
